Donation and retention of organs and tissue has come to the forefront as a result of enquires at Bristol, Liverpool and elsewhere. Current legislation is inadequate to meet modern requirements for full information and consent. The new Human Tissue Act will make the requirements of practitioners much clearer. In transplantation, research and teaching, appropriate consent will be pivotal, and proper training will be required to ensure best practice.
