In the literature, topological synthesis and dimensional synthesis are often treated separately. This separation is possible when one considers that topological synthesis consists of enumerating all types of mechanisms capable of performing a particular type of task. On the other hand, when the problem consists of selecting a type of mechanism capable of accomplishing a given, clearly defined task, then this selection cannot be made without considering the dimensional element. This study explains how it is possible to identify a relevant set of topologies (for problems of motion generation), with a perspective on dimensional synthesis (through the direct analytical method based on Burmester theory). How access to this group could be effected is also studied (the selection of a topology), still in conection with dimensional synthesis. Finally the approach proposed is illustrated by looking at a concrete example.
