Despite the fact that they are postulated as intermediates in many metal-catalyzed transformations, well-characterized complexes having bonds between late transition metals and alkoxo groups are not as well known as their alkylmetal analogues. Even fewer examples of monomeric late transition metal hydroxo complexes are available. This article summarizes recent published work from the author's group that has resulted in the synthesis of a number of rhodium, iridium, rhenium, osmium and ruthenium alkoxo and hydroxo complexes and has allowed investigation of their chemical properties.
