Splenogonadal fusion is a rare congenital malformation characterized by intrauterine fusion of the spleen and gonad. We present a 13-year-old boy referred to our clinic, with left scrotal mass and impalpable testis on the right. The scrotal mass was diagnosed histologically as discontinuous-type splenogonadal fusion and intra-abdominal displaced right testis as germ cell aplasia (Sertoli cell only).
To present a new method of laparoscopic Y-V pyeloplasty to treating ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) stenoses in patients with enlarged renal pelvis. Y-V pyeloplasty for the correction of UPJ stenosis has become well known. Despite its simplicity and good anatomic and functional results, there is no reduction of renal pelvic size and thus Y-V pyeloplasty has not been recommended for treating UPJ stenoses...
This review examines the effect of mitochondrial generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and aging on human spermatozoa and seminal antioxidants. We discuss the effect of continuous ROS production on biomarkers of aging, such as germ cell telomeres and telomerase, lipofuscin, and amyloid. These markers may be responsible for telomere shortening and subsequent decrease in sperm count, decline in...
To examine the usefulness of several preoperative parameters obtained through transrectal ultrasonography in predicting the outcome of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).A total of 572 men aged 51-85 years scheduled to undergo TURP for benign prostatic hyperplasia were prospectively enrolled, and 560 were ultimately evaluated. We preoperatively assessed International Prostate Symptom Score...
To present our initial experience with a pure transvaginal approach for the removal of mesh erosion involving the bladder secondary to placement of transvaginal mesh for management of pelvic organ prolapse using a prolapse kit.Transvaginal excision of mesh erosion involving the bladder after mesh placement using a prolapse kit was performed in 2 patients. A U-shaped incision is made in the anterior...
To review our perioperative antibiotic management of patients with chronic bacteriuria who underwent urological procedures, and the relationship to postoperative infectious complications.Between January 2002 and January 2007, 77 patients with chronic bacteriuria underwent 94 major open procedures, including ileocystoplasty (n = 53), ileal conduit (n = 19), and pubovaginal sling placement (n = 18)...
To review the associations between measured variables in Penile Doppler ultrasound procedures. Penile Doppler ultrasound is useful in the evaluation of erectile dysfunction, but there is no uniform standard of performing the procedure. It is generally believed that a peak systolic velocity > 30 cm/s, minimal venous leak, and resistive index > 0.8 are essential for adequate erection. While the...
To investigate the mechanism underlying the ameliorating effect of tamsulosin, an α 1 -adrenoceptor antagonist, on storage symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, the effects of tamsulosin on bladder blood flow (BBF) and bladder function was evaluated in rats with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO).BOO was produced by partial ligature of the proximal urethra, which was maintained...
To hypothesize that numeracy may also predict patient misunderstanding of the American Urological Association symptom score (AUA-SS). Health literacy consists of document and prose literacy, both considered “traditional” literacy. But, health literacy also comprises quantitative literacy or numeracy. We previously reported that document literacy independently predicts misunderstanding of the AUA-SS...
To report the long-term clinical outcomes and durability of response after treatment with induction intravesical docetaxel. Most novel agents used to treat bacillus Calmette-Guerin refractory high-grade non–muscle-invasive (NMI) bladder cancer are evaluated only after short follow-up periods. Our previously published phase I trial demonstrated that docetaxel is a safe agent for intravesical therapy...
To assess the etiology and the late effects of penile fractures treated by immediate surgical intervention.Between 1986 and 2008, a total of 155 patients with penile fracture were treated surgically in our center. The interval from injury to presentation was between 1 and 96 hours. Those patients were contacted by mail or phone and were re-evaluated. All patients were re-evaluated by questionnaire...
