We define hyperkinetic circulation as that state in which cardiac rate, output and contractility are supranormal, and postulate a possible role for beta adrenergic blocking drugs in the treatment of certain hyperkinetic circulatory states. Fear, anxiety and other emotional states as well as exercise are associated with circulatory and clinical manifestations that can be related to increased adrenergic activity. With beta adrenergic inhibition most of these findings can be markedly attenuated.A variety of hyperkinetic circulatory states associated with increased arterial pressure can be treated effectively with beta adrenergic blocking drugs. Thus, labile (borderline), mild essential and systolic hypertension are all manifested by clinical and physiologic evidence of a hyperkinetic circulation; beta adrenergic blocking drugs will significantly reduce arterial pressure and produce a remission of certain disturbing symptoms related to the hyperkinetic circulation.
