Exciton condensation has been realized at low temperatures and high pressure in several intermediate valence compounds with Tm and Sm such as TmSe 0 . 4 5 Te 0 . 5 5 , TmSe 0 . 3 2 Te 0 . 6 8 , Sm 0 . 9 0 La 0 . 1 0 S, Sm 0 . 7 5 La 0 . 2 5 S, Sm 0 . 6 5 La 0 . 3 5 S, Sm 0 . 8 5 Tm 0 . 1 5 S, Sm 0 . 7 5 Tm 0 . 2 5 S. The most pronounced effects, however, are found in TmSe 0 . 4 5 Te 0 . 5 5 . In this material a high pressure isobar and a low temperature isotherm have been measured, which provide strong evidence for the exciton condensation. An extremely soft state is observed in a particular pressure range at room temperature, while at low temperature the material is nearly as hard as diamond.
