We have isolated and characterized the cDNA and genomic DNA encoding fibroblast growth factor receptor-4 of Xenopus laevis (XFGFR-4). The gene encompassing the total coding sequence spans about 10 kb, consists of 17 exons, and has an organization very similar to those of mammalian genes encoding FGFR-1 and -2, except that the XFGFR-4 gene does not contain an alternative exon for the third immunoglobulin-like...
A cDNA encoding a zebrafish Sox protein (Sry-type high-mobility-group box) was isolated and sequenced. The sequence within the HMG box is close to those of the B subfamily comprising mouse Sox-1, Sox-2, Sox-3 and Sox-14. While much of the rest of the zebrafish protein is unique, there are blocks of amino acids showing considerable identity with regions of Sox-1, -2 and -3. These domains may represent...
We report the isolation and characterization of a chicken cDNA which putatively encodes an actin-like protein (chACTL). This 394-amino-acid (aa) polypeptide shares sequence homology (81, 70 and 67% identical aa, respectively) with three actin-related proteins (ARP) described for Drosophila melanogaster (ARP14D), Caenorhabditis elegans (ACTL) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ACT2). At least six chACTL...
In order to isolate genes important in controlling embryonic development in Tunicates, a genomic library from the ascidian Ciona intestinalis was screened with a degenerate oligodeoxyribonucleotide encoding the third helix ofAntennapedia -type homeoboxes. Fourteen C. intestinalis homeobox genes, corresponding to several classes of homeodomains, have been identified. Five of the isolated homeoboxes...
The study of insect cuticular proteins and their sequences is of interest because they are involved in protein-protein and protein-chitin interactions which confer the mechanical properties and fine architecture of the cuticle. Moreover, in the coleopteran Tenebrio molitor there is a dramatic change in cuticular architecture between pre- and postecdysial secretion. We report the isolation, by differential...
A Caenorhabditis elegans (Ce) homologue to the eukaryotic tcp-1 gene (encoding t-complex polypeptide-1) has been mapped, isolated and sequenced. Ce tcp-1 is a single-copy gene located on chromosome II. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the gene reveals the presence of four introns in the coding region and repetitive elements upstream from the start codon. The predicted Ce TCP-1 protein displays more...
We have previously reported the isolation and preliminary characterisation of a full-length cDNA sequence derived from the human BBC1 gene, a gene which displays differential expression in tumours of the female breast [Adams et al., Hum. Mol. Genet. 1 (1992) 91-96]. Here, we report the isolation and characterisation of the Drosophila melanogaster (Dm) homologue of this human gene. The Dmbbcl cDNA...
We have isolated four non-tissue-specific helix-loop-helix (HLH) transcription factors from Xenopus laevis (Xl). While some are clearly orthologous to known mammalian HLH proteins, others have dramatic amino-acid differences in otherwise highly conserved protein domains. We propose that these changes arose following the tetraploidization of Xl approx. 30 Myr ago.
