We have isolated four non-tissue-specific helix-loop-helix (HLH) transcription factors from Xenopus laevis (Xl). While some are clearly orthologous to known mammalian HLH proteins, others have dramatic amino-acid differences in otherwise highly conserved protein domains. We propose that these changes arose following the tetraploidization of Xl approx. 30 Myr ago.
A new locus, csgA, has been identified in a search for developmental genes transcribed by Eσ G in Bacillus subtilis. csgA has the potential to encode three small proteins, CsgAA, CsgAB and CsgAC. The latter two would be encoded by overlapping ORFs. csgA is expressed in the spore chamber of the differentiating cell and is under the control of σ G and the transcriptional regulatory...
Bone morphogenetic protein 4, BMP4, plays an important role in the development of various organs including the lungs. Little is known regarding the regulation of Bmp4 gene expression in any organ. In the lung, indirect evidence indicates that NKX2.1, a homeodomain transcriptional factor with a demonstrated role in lung morphogenesis, may be a potential upstream regulator of Bmp4 gene expression. In...
Sequence specific transcription factors are essential for pattern formation and cell differentiation processes in mammals. The formation of the abdominal wall depends on a flawless merge of several developmental fields in time and space. The absence of Pitx2 leads to an open abdominal wall in mice, while mutations in humans result in umbilical defects, suggesting that a single homeobox transcription...
