False aneurysms of the peripheral vascular system are common following penetrating trauma or blunt trauma associated with fractures. They are rare, however, following blunt trauma with the absence of fracture. Arteriography has been advocated as a necessary tool in the accurate preoperative diagnosis of false aneurysms. This case report suggests that ultrasound scanning as a non-invasive and less expensive investigation may be all that is required.
