This paper reviews and demonstrates the state of the art in steel building analysis, design and drafting software. Total integration of the steel building design process is discussed and demonstrated with currently available software capable of creating complete structural models for both the lateral and gravity structural systems. Also, this paper reports on how using such software can increase the competitiveness of steel building designs on several fronts. In addition, a discussion of software integration across design and construction disciplines is investigated. Exchange of building design data, from structural analysis and design software to steel fabrication and estimation software as well as to manufacturing equipment, is the key to enhancing the way fabricated steel buildings are designed and constructed. Current ideas and direction as well as a summary of what data are required to effectively exchange information are reviewed.
