In order to further elucidate the influence of the anion X - on the catalytic properties of the cationic C 1 2 -allylnickel(II) complexes [Ni(C 1 2 H 1 9 )]X in the stereospecific butadiene polymerization, the tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl) borate (1) (X=B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ) was synthesized according to a novel method as a new member of this complex class. Its activity as a one-component catalyst for the 1,4-cis-polymerization of butadiene was compared with the performance of the known complexes with X=PF 6 , BF 4 (2), and CF 3 SO 3 (3). From the crystal structures of 2 and 3, the electrolytic conductivities, and the 1 3 C-NMR spectroscopic data it can be concluded that the coordinative interaction of the anion with nickel(II) increases in the following manner: B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 - ~PF 6 - <BF 4 - CF 3 SO 3 - . The consequences of this behavior for the different catalytic properties of the complexes based on the given reaction model for the allylnickel complex catalyzed butadiene polymerization are analyzed and discussed in a mechanistic context.
