Fresh groundwater in Lakshadweep occurs only in the form of lenses floating over seawater. These lenses are very fragile and spatially limited. A detailed hydro-geophysical study carried out recently has enabled the characterisation of the geometry of various lenses and the evaluation of the quantum of fresh groundwater resource on 12 islands of Lakshadweep. It is inferred that the fresh groundwater lenses are in hydraulic continuity with sea water, and any excessive withdrawal would impair the quality of water due to salt water intrusion which, eventually, would lead to its ultimate destruction.
