Prowadzona obecnie intensywna polichemioterapia w ostrej białaczce limfoblastycznej daje szansę na wyleczenie u blisko 70–80% dzieci. Wiąże sito jednocześnie z możliwością wystąpienia różnorodnych objawów toksycznych we wszystkich fazach leczenia. Przedstawiono 3 przypadki dzieci z ostrą białaczką limfoblastyczną, u których obserwowano objaw cukrzycy insulinozależnej.Wykazano ścisły związek z prowadzoną sterydoterapią (Encotron, Dexamethason) i/ lub stosowaniem wysokich dawek L-asparaginazy. Przedstawiono sposoby leczenia, polegające na odstawieniu diabetogennych preparatów oraz zastosowaniu diety cukrzycowej i insuliny, po których u wszystkich pacjentów obserwowano szybką normalizację glikemii i – co ważniejsze – możliwe było kontynuowanie terapii przeciwbiałaczkowej. na podstawie literatury opisującej podobne przypadki oraz na podstawie własnych obserwacji przedstawiono również sposoby zapobiegania i wczesnego wykrywania cukrzycy insulinozależnej u dzieci z ostrą białaczka limfoblastyczną. Polegają one na przede wszystkim na wnikliwej analizie stanu klinicznego dziecka i odpowiednio częstych kontrolach glikemii, w szczególności w grupach ryzyka, tj. u chorych otrzymujących wybitnie diabetogenne preparaty, często różnych grup, w skojarzeniu potencjalizującym ten efekt.
