The pressure characteristics under the forefoot in a healthy asymptomatic population have been compared to those presenting with hallux valgus deformity. 90 dynamic footprints from 30 subjects have been recorded using the Musgrave Footprint System. The peak pressures, contact times (as a percentage of stance phase) and times to peak pressure have been analysed for each metatarsal head. The patterns of pressure distribution across the forefeet of the whole group have been classed into four groups subjectively and confirmed using cluster analysis. The medial pressure pattern occurred more frequently in the hallux valgus group. The mean hallux valgus forefoot had increased pressure medially with increased contact time and time to peak pressure.
