Nypa megafossils dominated by fruits are described from Oligocene and Lower Miocene sediments of Assam and Mizoram, respectively. The origin, past distribution and migration of Nypa are discussed in the light of recent findings. This study indicates that India might be the place of its origin. Its presence, along with some other coastal elements, reinforces the concept that the Bay of Bengal was extending...
The main taxonomic and stratigraphical results of a study of ostracods from the middle-late Miocene of the Tremiti Islands and the Hyblean Plateau are presented. The faunas are mostly typical of deep thermospheric or psychrospheric bathyal environments. Excluding a few, mostly juvenile shallow water contaminants, a total of 127 species were recorded. Twenty-four taxa are discussed herein; of these,...
Quantitative analyses of ostracod assemblages from three cores recovered on the Tyrrhenian shelf (Gaeta and Salerno Gulfs) have been applied to construct palaeobathymetric curves. Palaeoclimatic curves obtained from planktonic foraminifera, calcareous nanoplankton, pteropods and pollen are available for the same cores, in addition to sedimentological, mineralogical, geochemical (δ 18 ...
This paper investigates substrate preferences of the Greek Colobine Mesopithecus pentelicus WAGNER, from the Miocene of Pikermi, by examining selected functional features of the calcaneus that distinguish between arboreal and terrestrial Cercopithecidae. Mesopithecus possesses a relatively long proximal calcaneal region associated with a slightly low and wide surface for the insertion of m. triceps...
In this paper, the stratigraphy and depositional setting of Upper Jurassic basinal sediments at the eastern margin of the Tabas Block of east-central Iran are discussed with special emphasis on the rich ammonite fauna. The basinal sediments comprise the upper part of the Qal'eh Dokhtar Limestone Formation and a new, hitherto not recognized lithostratigraphic unit, the low-weathering Korond Formation,...
A recent publication in Geobios is the reason for contrasting two methods of correlation. It is concluded that the use of the ''Faunal Distance Index'' gave erroneous results in the examples studied, whereas the study of evolutionary lineages gave results that are more consistent with accepted correlations. It is stressed that care should be taken in citing authors or data in a correct way.
The Toarcian sediments exposed at Sainte-Verge (Deux-Sevres, France) are especially rich in echinoderm remains. The present paper describes and illustrates the ophiuroids. On the basis of lateral arm plates, 13 species are distinguished, including two new ones: Sinosura fasciata sp. nov. and Sinosura extensa sp. nov. Most of the recognized species have been recorded previously from the Late Toarcian...
A new genus and two new species, Salagouneura chimaira nov. gen. and nov. sp. and Phaneroneura minuta nov. sp., together with several other specimens of uncertain affinities, are herein assigned to the family Martynoviidae. This family was previously only known from the Lower Permian of Oklahoma and Kansas (USA). The new specimens have been discovered in the Salagou Formation (Permian; Herault, France)...
New rhinocerotid teeth from Laogou in Hezheng (Gansu, China) are described and identified as Hispanotherium matritense. Comparing the other Chinese Middle Miocene elasmotheres with material of H. matritense from Iberian localities and Laogou, we confirm the synonymy proposed previously for the species Hispanotherium lintungensis, Tesselodon fangxianensis, Caementodon tongxinensis and Huaqingtherium...
The island of Lesvos, eastern Aegean, Greece is well known for the Neogene Petrified Forest of Sigri, situated in the southeastern part of island. The Miocene mammals were hitherto unknown in the island and the deinothere studied herein is the first evidence of their presence. The material was found near the village Gavathas in strongly silicified lacustrine marls. The morphological characters of...
A new forewing venation pattern of the Tococladidae is proposed and the phylogenetic affinities of this family are discussed, based on Tococladus garrici nov. sp. This fossil comes from the Salagou Formation (Permian, Saxonian Group, Lodeve basin, France). The Tococladidae is assigned to the Archaeorthoptera . The biostratigraphic implications of this discovery are briefly discussed, but it is still...
The Seamount 1 expedition, on board R.V. Noroit in 1987, explored the Lusitanian seamounts off Portugal and the Ibero-Moroccan Gulf of the Northeast Atlantic. A rich brachiopod fauna of about 15 species has been identified in 52 of the 117 stations sampled. The species living around these seamounts are examined, observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to complete their micro-morphological...
