Saxonagrion minutus nov. gen. et sp. was found in the Saxonian (Salagou Formation) of the Lodève basin. It is the oldest and the first record of the modern infra-order Panodonata in the Palaezoic (Upper Permian of France). The present discovery supports the hypothesis concerning the persistance of many groups of Odonatoptera through the Permo-Triassic boundary.
Fossils of the little pig Aureliachoerus Ginsburg, 1974 from Agreda and other Spanish localities are described. A comparison of material from the type localities shows that A. aurelianensis and A. minus are different species. The small A. minus decreased further in size. The larger A. aurelianensis increased the length and complexity of the last molar. This is the oldest clear example of a masticatory...
This contribution is focused on a high-resolution cyclostratigraphic investigation by means of an integrated study on the deposits on Zakynthos island (Ionian sea) within the Olduvai polarity subchron (from 1.95 to 1.77 Ma). Accurate palaeomagnetic study has been carried out to specify the precise position of the Olduvai subchron in the Zakynthos city series, named “Citadel” section. New detailed...
We propose a new mathematical technique to describe the morphology of organisms exhibiting radial symmetry. For example, the calyxes of some primitive camerates have a highly regular five-fold symmetry pattern suitable for this analysis. To analyze the plate arrangement, we digitalize the plate diagram codifying the plates with a binary system. After, we expand this binary function as a truncated...
The argillaceous sandstones of the Ottakkovil Formation, dated as Early-Upper Maastrichtian (Pachydiscus otacodensis Zone) yield a diversified fauna of echinoids, gastropods, ammonites, oysters and rudists. The study of these rudists belonging to the species Bournonia mutabilis allowed to complete the only existing description and figures given by Stoliczka 1871 and to confirm, by means of the shell...
During the Middle Triassic marine transgression in Spain, several lingulide populations were fossilized in the Iberian Range (western part of Sephardic Province) and the recorded specimens have been described previously under several specific names. The paleontological aspects of the Jalance (Valencia province) section have been studied for the first time. Its exceptionally large population was fossilized...
Ammonoid ribs, tubercles, keels and other ornamental features are organized in a great diversity of patterns. From the viewpoint of developmental biology, these patterns can only be understood as the product of a dynamical system controlled by genes but also dependent upon biochemical and mechanical processes. Here, an attempt is made to view the development of ammonoid ornamentation in the light...
The Early Cretaceous Okurodani Formation of Gifu Prefecture, Central Honshu, Japan, is yielding an assemblage of small freshwater and terrestrial vertebrates which represent some of the oldest specimens of their kind from Japan. Although rare, at least two types of lizards-probably more-have been recovered. The most common form, described here under the name Sakurasaurus shokawensis nov. gen. et ep...
The distribution of ostracods across the Frasnian/Famennian boundary in the Schmidt quarry is documented and all the benthonic species figured. Eighty per cent of the Frasnian ostracods disappeared close to this boundary, and all myodocopid species (Entomozoacea and Cypridinacea) were exterminated. The recovery in the Famennian seems to have been slow and gradual, and twelve lazarus species have been...
