In the Vallesian fluvio-lacustrine sequences of La Cerdanya Basin (Eastern Pyrenees) eight taphofacies have been recognized based on the study of plant remains. In the deltaic swamps of the basin (as observed in the Sanavastre opencast mine) taphonomical processes were twofold. The palustrine and lacustrine muds contain an autochthonous assemblage of rooted hydrophytic plants with abundant “cyperoids”,...
The basin-fill sequence from the Tertiary Bicorp Basin (Eastern Spain) comprises a lower alluvial unit andan upper lacustrine unit. The lower part of the lacustrine unit includes a tuff bed, interbedded between two mammal-bearing horizons which have yielded fossil rodents characteristic of the MN 10 standard Mammal Unit (Late Vallesian, Late Miocene). K-Ar age determinations on the tuff have provided...
Different opinions have been expressed on the age of the Molayan mammal locality in Afghanistan which has been estimated as middle or late Turolian. This paper reviews the available biochronological data, mainly provided by affinities of Hipparion molayanense, Mesopithecus pentelicus and rodents, and compares this fauna with those from the Siwaliks of Pakistan and of the Aegean area. These comparisons...
The fossil rhinoceros and hipparions from a new, Late Miocene mammalian fauna in Turkey are described. The scant material does not allow a specific determination of the latter. Various indices, often calculated on hipparion teeth and bones and believed to be phylogenetically and stratigraphically important, are critically discussed.
Shallow sublitoral marine facies of the Lower Cretaceous in the Iberian Range (central aera, Josa, Teruel, NE Spain) and the Upper Miocene in the SW aera of the Guadalquivir Basin (Lepe-Ayamonte area, Huelva, SW Spain) have revealed the presence of the trace fossil Macanopsis plataniformis nov. ichnosp. The most characteristic feature of this ichnospecies is the presence of a subvertical shaft at...
New Rhinocerotidae remains from the Upper Miocene in Yulafli (Çorlu-Thrace/Turkey) include Aceratherium incisivum Kaup, 1832, Acerorhinus zernowi (Borissiak, 1914) and Dihoplus schleiermacheriKaup, 1832). A. incisivum and D. schleiermacheri are first documented in Turkey. A. zernowi is already known in Turkey but is first described from Yulafli. This faunal assemblage indicates a Turolian (MN 11–MN...
The collection under study is one of the richest in postcranial material of Ancylotherium pentelicum. Its importance is great since it comes from the classic locality of Pikermi, type locality of the species, and includes some rare or barely known skeletal parts. Moreover, it gives us a better aspect for the size range of A. pentelicum, a species relatively rare in Late Miocene localities.
New materials from the middle part of the Bahe formation are described as Dinocrocuta gigantea. Review of the species reveals that it is derived in the evolutionary lineage of Dinocrocuta, and biochronologically later than Vallesian records from Turkey. The only possibly related Vallesian species from China is Crocuta gigantea xizangensis from Biru, Tibet, which may prove to be conspecific with D...
This study examines the efficacy of published δ 18 O data from the calcite of Late Miocene surface dwelling planktonic foraminifer shells, for sea surface temperature estimates for the pre-Quaternary. The data are from 33 Late Miocene (Messinian) marine sites from a modern latitudinal gradient of 64°N to 48°S. They give estimates of SSTs in the tropics/subtropics (to 30°N and S) that are mostly...
During the last five years our continued excavations in the known late Miocene mammal localities of Macedonia (Greece) provided several new specimens of the hominoid primate Ouranopithecus macedoniensis. This new material includes maxillary and mandibular remains and it is described and compared to the old material of Ouranopithecus in the present article. The material of Ouranopithecus from the three...
A new genus and species of ground-hornbill are described from the Late Tertiary (Late Miocene) fluviative deposits in Hadzhidimovo (Hadzhidimovo-1, or Hadzhidimovo-Girizite locality), in southwestern Bulgaria. The cranial half of a scapula and the distal third of a femur have been recovered. The morphology distinguishes the specimen from the recent species of Bucorvus, the closest genus. Most interesting...
In this paper the ostracod assemblages recovered from several brackish Late Miocene Italian deposits have been analysed from a palaeobiogeographical perspective. During late Tortonian-early Messinian it is possible to recognize in Italy rich ostracod assemblages characterized by a wide contingent of taxa with central European or Mediterranean affinity, while only few brackish and freshwater ostracods...
The Late Miocene Italian brackish Loxoconchidae are herein discussed and illustrated. Three genera and two subgenera have been recognized in the brackish Italian basins: Loxoconcha, Loxocorniculina, Loxoconchissa (Loxoconchissa) and Loxoconchissa (Loxocaspia). Taking into account the diagnostic characters of several Loxoconchidae genera, in this paper Loxocorniculina is raised at a generic rank, Loxocaspia...
A systematic revision of Italian Messinian Prolagus findings has been performed, evidencing the presence of four different species. Comparative analyses allowed their separation in two groups corresponding to two different palaeobioprovinces characterized by distinct faunal affinities, source areas and tempos and modes of colonization. Such considerations allowed to cast a new light on the palaeobiogeography...
