Electron beam welding is a special welding technique which requires a very complex and expensive machine. To achieve a good welding result with this technique a special set of parameters has to be adjusted on the machine. Those parameters are dependent on the material and thickness of the metal sheet to be joined. For this dependency a mathematical model does not exist so that the way to determine parameters up to now is by testing parameters until a sufficient set of parameters is found. This way to determine the set of parameters can cost a lot of time. This abstract shows a new fuzzy approach to determine those parameters with the aid of experienced data of former welding tasks and the means of Fuzzy Logic. The System EBFLATSY (Electron Beam Fuzzy Logic AT SYstem) to realize this approach is a fuzzy rulebased system for a personal computer. The system calculates and optimizes electron beam parameters dependent on material and thickness. Fuzzy logic is a computer technique invented by Zadeh (1965) which allows to express and evaluate complex relations in a linguistic way. Using this technique it is possible to simplify the electron beam welding process by describing the dependencies between welding task and parameters in a linguistic way.
