The development of real-time PCR technologies for the quantitation of viral genomes has modified our vision of viral infections. This is the case for HHV-6 and HHV-7 for which these methods allow new fields of research to understand viral infection and pathogenicities. Thus, a threshold of 1000 copies of HHV-6 genome per million of peripheral blood mononuclear cells has recently been associated with several symptoms in stem cells transplant recipients. Further studies are underway to precise the use of these new tools.
