The effects of nitriding the samarium-cobalt intermetallic SmCo 5 are studied. It is observed that increased amounts of nitrogen are absorbed as the SmCo 5 powders are heated at higher temperatures in a flowing N 2 atmosphere. The saturation magnetization M s of the bonded SmCo 5 N x magnets initially increases as the amount of nitrogen absorbed is increased but then decreases as additional nitrogen is absorbed. A possible explanation of this behavior is given.
