From the reaction of FeCl 2 with the ligand [C 5 H 4 CMe 2 C 9 H 7 ] - , where a cyclopentadienyl and an indene unit are linked by a methylene like bridge, the new complex [{η 5 -C 5 H 4 CMe 2 (C 9 H 7 )} 2 Fe] (1) was obtained. This compound was deprotonated and reacted with [(cod)RhCl] 2 (cod: 1,5-cyclooctadiene) to give the two new heterobimetallic complexes [(η 5 -C 5 H 4 CMe 2 C 9 H 7 )Fe(η 5 -C 5 H 4 CMe 2 -η 5 -C 9 H 6 )Rh(cod)] (2) and [Fe{(η 5 -C 5 H 4 CMe 2 -η 5 -C 9 H 6 )Rh(cod)} 2 ] (3). The related species [(η 5 -C 5 H 4 CMe 2 C 9 H 7 )Fe(η 5 -Cp)] (4) and [CpFe(η 5 -C 5 H 4 CMe 2 -η 5 -C 9 H 6 )Rh(cod)] (5) were synthesized by the reaction of lithioferrocene with dimethylbenzofulvene and [(cod)RhCl] 2 in the latter case. [(η 5 -C 9 H 6 CMe 2 C 4 H 9 )Rh(cod)] (6) and [(η 5 -C 9 H 6 CCH 2 Me)Rh(cod)] (7) are side products in the last reaction. All new compounds were characterized by MS and NMR. Single crystals of 4, 5 and [(η 5 -C 5 H 4 CMe 2 -η 5 -C 9 H 6 )Rh 2 (cod) 2 ] (8) were characterized by X-ray analysis.
