Water samples were analysed for dissolved inorganic arsenic, monomethylarsenic (MMA) and dimethylarsenic (DMA). It was shown that estuarine, porewater and atmospheric inputs of arsenic species were relatively small during the observational periods, and that almost all of the methylated compounds originated from decaying algal tissue. Demethylation of DMA and MMA throughout winter contributed to the dissolved inorganic arsenic pool. The results are discussed in the context of the development of a predictive model for the cycling of arsenic in the North Sea.
