The aim of this study to present the principle of the 13 CO 2 breath tests.Breath tests have the common characteristic that when a substrate is administered to a patient, a functional group of this substrate (in which a normally present 12 C atom has been replaced by the stable —non radioactive— 13 C atom), this functional group is cleaved enzymatically under specific physiological circumstances (absorption, infection…). After cleavage, the marked subgroups undergo a metabolic process that ends with expiration of labelled CO 2 .Breath tests are a novel non-invasive clinical diagnostic research method. They measure gastro-intestinal, hepatological and metabolic functions directly in physiological conditions.
