To find a starting point for further development of possible Al based bulk metallic glasses, two ternary systems of Al–Ni–Y and Al–Co–Y were selected for studying their glass formability by monitoring microstructure variations. It was shown that the easy glass forming composition region in these systems is away from the composition of exhibiting a glass transition characteristic. The best glass former Al 85 Ni 4 Y 8 and Al 85 Co 4 Y 8 (numbers indicate at.%), with the thickness up to 200μm, was characterized by a non-obvious glass transition and a low primary crystallization temperature.
