The history of the development of finite elements for shell analysis is reviewed with emphasis on innovations that improved quality. Three major events are noted: the introduction of the first plate bending element in 1961, the introduction of Mindlin shell elements beginning in 1969, and the introduction of higher order p elements, which is recent and ongoing. The paper concludes with an examination of the effects of transverse shear flexibility on the accuracy of p elements.
