The shape of a median crack, driven by a point force, is deduced. It is shown that if it is assumed that self-arrest occurs when the crack tip stress intensity factor falls below the fracture toughness, a near-circular crack may be expected to develop. A universal calibration for the crack tip stress intensity factor is given.
