According to the author, Eugen Jona is a prominent figure of the generation of professional Slovak linguists and Slovakists that has formed professional scientific research of the Slovak language. E. Jona systematically dealt with the history of Slovak linguistics, historical circumstances of particular philologists and linguists. His in-depth analytical studies were devoted e.g. to works of Anton Bernolak, Ludovit Stur, Joseph Charles Viktorin or Paul Dolezal. Important is his work Notable Slovak Linguists at the Time of Ludovit Stur. Eugen Jona can be regarded as the founder of systematic history of the Slovak linguistics as an autonomous linguistic discipline. The author appreciates the participation of Prof. Jona in forming the standard of contemporary literary Slovak language - and also his lexicographical work and behaviour in the team of authors who wrote out the Directory of Slovak spelling rules issued in 1953. The author is personally grateful to Prof. Jona for commemoration of the work by E. Pauliny (Intention of Verbal Process), which is an original theoretical platform of the Slovak linguistic research.
