This article draws on Jan Błoński’s polar formula (later developed by other critics) in interpreting Czesław Miłosz’s poetry. Błoński approach situates Miłosz’s work in opposition to linguistic concepts of poetry only and at the same time treats it as an endorsement of values that are distinguished by their clarity. This article exposes the narrow scope of such dichotomous readings and suggests that Miłosz’s work be seen as a attempt at a chiastic balance between extremities. In this perspective Miłosz can be regarded as a follower of the vitalist way of thinking - fully conscious of the human condition and affirming life in spite of the certainty of death.
