The financial crisis of 2008 will have a rank in history similar to that of the great crisis of the 1930s or of the oil crises of the 1970s. It is not just a temporary economic depression but a turning point at which the world economy structure is changing. As such, it will for long be the focus of the economists’ and historians’ interest. At the moment, as the process is going on, I would like to try and answer three questions. First: why, as opposed to what some prognoses put, isn’t it a Chinese crisis? Second: what was the role of the financial institutions crisis in the outbreak of the current depression? Third: how are these issues related to the crisis of the liberal reflection on economy?
