Przedmiotem artykułu są podejmowane przez socjologów oraz ekonomistów rozważania nad społecznymi podstawami działań gospodarczych. Praca składa się z dwóch części. Część pierwsza obejmuje rozważania nad instytucjonalizmem w socjologii. Przedmiotem drugiej części jest instytucjonalizm ekonomiczny. Zasadniczym celem jest porównanie różnych podejść instytucjonalnych powstałych na gruncie obu dyscyplin i udzielenie odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy podejścia te ukazują i wyjaśniają zakorzenienie działań gospodarczych w ładzie instytucjonalnym w sposób uzupełniający, czy też może przeciwnie, w sposób konkurencyjny? W pracy dowodzi się, że tworzenie programów badawczych nad działaniami gospodarczymi wymaga spotkania dwóch dyscyplin społecznych – ekonomii i socjologii.
