Toothed gears are among the most widely used elements of mechanical systems and it is their durability that has enormous influence on the correct operation of these systems. Evaluation of a toothed gear’s durability is a very complex issue. Many defects with diverse symptoms and effects, that are associated with physical phenomena which have not been ultimately explained, can actually occur during operation of a toothed gear. The loads as well as the properties of materials used for constructing the elements of a toothed gear change in a random manner and that is the reason why stochastic models are created which form only an approximate reflection of reality. For the purpose of more precise assessment of a toothed gear’s strength one should take into account how a toothed gear’s strength decreases with time. Toothed gears are manufactured and assembled with some tolerance, hence the obtained geometrical dimensions change randomly within the predefined range of tolerance. The paper will present accelerated examination of fatigue-related breaking of tooth in a toothed gear. The experiment which has been performed served as the basis for analyzing the registered vibration signal. The results of this analysis allowed detection of defect-initiation. A method of modeling the changes of a diagnostic parameter during initiation and development of a tooth fracture was also proposed.
