The problem of water reservoirs contamination with heavy metals (potentially toxic elements) is a serious environmental issue in Poland and all over the world. Metals get into the waters along with industrial and domestic sewage, as well as with surface runoff (from fields and roads). Finally, these elements are accumulated in bottom sediments, which perform a number of important functions in aquatic ecosystems, i.a. they provide a habitat for Iiving organisms. Taking into account the fact that metals are non-degradable in natural environment, the analysis of chemical composition of bottom sediments is the main element in assessing the level of aquatic ecosystem pollution with these elements. Currently, various guidelines and groups of indices a reused for this purpose. However, for a full assessment of the ecological condition of a water reservoir, it is necessary, to determine the chemical form of heavy metals in which they occurred in bottom sediments. This approach will allow for the assessment of the potential risk that these elements pose to the environment and Iiving organisms. One of the methods that make it possible to determine with which components of bottom sediments particular heavy metals are associated is the process of 3-step sequential extraction, proposed by the European Community Bureau of Reference (now Standards, Measurements and Testing Program).
