Increased progress in power electronics has increased interest in various potential applications of thyristor - controlled devices in electric power systems. Power systems equipped with such devices are referred to as Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). Due to the speed of thyristor control all FACTS devices arę fast enough to improve the transient stability of system-and power system damping. The main problem associated with FACTS devices is the control algorithm and its practical realisation based on locally measurable signals. This paper (part l) deals with this problem and describes control algorithm derived from nonlinear system model and the direct Lyapunov theory. In the accompanying papers simulation results (part 2) and tests on a physical model (part 3) are discussed.
