Tin and her lead-free solders are using more often in the last time like a protective coating in the printed circuit board technology. In this paper we described the main problems with which we can met when we use tin or lead free tin solders as protective coatings on printed circuit boards. These problems follow from physicochemical properties of tin and are consequence of reactions which are happen during deposition processes, reflow processes and storage. The phenomenon like intermetallic compounds or whiskers formation limit using of tin coating. They cause to loose solderability of coating or formation of bridges between endings of components. That leads to formation of defects in solder joints. In the result of the wide analysis of literature sources, the mechanisms of intermetallic compounds and whiskers formation were described, and dependence them on the deposits processes and morphology of tin coatings.
