The chloride corrosion process starts with cement gel shrinkage caused by its thickening under the influence of osmotic pressure. This gives occasion to the formation of microcracks in the paste, which can to come the paths of fast migration of chloride ions into the interior of the paste. The pastes containing considerable amounts of unreacted cement suffer the corrosion more slowly, since the hydration of cement accelerated by the attack of chlorides leads to the filling up of the microfissures. The corrosion process lies in the formation of basic calcium and magnesium chlorides, which induce the expansion and damage of the paste. The Friedel salt shows no expansive properties, just as arising secondary ettringite. For that reason the C3A content is not of such importance as in the case of sulphate corrosion.
