The sanitary quality of water supplied to recipients depends among others on its microbiological stability. The presence of bacteria in the water is the result of imperfect processes of water treatment and disinfection because their objective is not to obtain its sterility. This fact becomes a problem in the situation of secondary microbiological contamination of water as a result for instance of the growth of biofilm on the inside surfaces of water pipes. Over the last few years the waterpipes made of such plastics as PVC, PE, PB and PP have become especially popular. These materials, however, are not antimicrobial and such additional substances as stabilizers or hardeners which are applied in their manufacturing can be washed out and become potential food for microorganisms, stimulating their growth. The research covered the evaluation of the influence of the plastics on the microbiological quality of water, susceptibility to the development of bacteria in supply water and the microbiological damage to the synthetic materials caused by biofilm.
