A troublesome phenomenon observed in processes of mining extraction a number of lacustrine chalk deposits and lime gyttia from the Pleistocene/holocene transition phase is the shallowing of mine workings. Though it does not present serious obstacles in running the mining unit, it does present a considerable difficulty in making the quantitative balance of the mining output. The most important process factors that cause the shallowing of mine workings are the flow-off pressure and leaching. An indication of that is found in the relevant literature in the descriptions of variations of features of soils caused by the flow-off pressure and leaching and the results thereof. The scale of shallowing is an individual feature of the given deposit that depends on geological and mining conditions, in particular - hydro-geological, prevailing in the deposit and its environment. The variations of soil features caused by the flow-off pressure may be also of importance from the mine's operational safety point of view. The description of the phenomenon of shallowing of mine workings after extraction of lacustral chalk and lime gyttia, as presented in this work, has been made basing on own observations of the author and his research work conducted in more than thirty deposits in the Pomerania and Warmia areas, including the thoroughly explored deposit of "Suliszewo".
