W artykule omówiono historię kopalni, zagrożenia i podjęte kierunki działania w zakresiezabezpieczenia kopalni.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine is, in the world-wide scale, a unique monumental unit both as regards the richness of material culture heritage and in terms of unrepeatable objects of inanimate nature. Thanks to the multi-century mining operations conducted, whose beginning goes far back into the end of the XIII century, the rock salt deposit has been opened up through a huge number of mine workings (more than 2000 chambers and more than 200 km of drifts) out of which a certain part is preserved till now in a sound or satisfactory condition. In the said mine workings there are present traces of a multicentury toil of generations of miners; and being found till now are old-time mining tools and also fragments of, sometimes almost complete, machines or equipment used some time ago. Fascinating is the architecture of the Wieliczka underground facilities, a maze of never-ending drifts (galleries), huge, almost monumental chambers. Discussed in the article is the history of the Mine, the hazards and measures taken as regards the Mine's preservation.
