Car emissions contribute markedly to the global pollution level in the environment. As a result of incomplete hydrocarbon fuel combustion, many toxic substances (carbon monoxide, aromatic and paraffin hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones, alkohols and PAHs) are relesed into the atmosphere. Taking into account the composition and temperature of the exhaust gases, catalytic afterburning seems to be best suited for their purification. For the purpose of the study two monolithic platinum catalysts were prepared - one resting on a ceramic support (P-1), the other one on a metal support (M-1). The activity of the two catalysts was tested in the oxidation of VOCs and PAHs carried by real exhaust gases from a spark-ignition engine. The activity of both the catalysts was found to be high. At smooth engine run, in the presence of M-1, the efficiency of PAH oxidation approached 100%. Small amounts of acenaphthene were detected only in the gas from the afterburner.
Aktywność badanych katalizatorów sprawdzono w reakcji utleniania lotnych związków organicznych i WWA emitowanych w rzeczywistych gazach spalinowych z silnika o zapłonie iskrowym. Stwierdzono wysoką aktywność obu katalizatorów w spalaniu tych zanieczyszczeń. W warunkach regularnej pracy silnika wielopierścieniowe węglowodory aromatyczne dopalane były z około 100%-ową skutecznością na katalizatorze metalicznym. W gazach poreakcyjnych wykrywano jedynie niewielkie ilości acenaftenu.
