In the paper there are presented some selected results of the investigations of mechanical properties and acoustic emission (AE) in polycrystalline magnesium (Fig. 1), Mg-Li (Fig. 3a), Mg-Li-Al alloys and related composites reinforced by short delta Al2O3 fibers (Fig. 2a, Fig. 2b, Fig. 4a, Fig. 5a and Fig. 5b) as well as in ceramic materials such as aluminous porcelain (Fig. 6a and Fig. 7a) and cordierite reinforced by mullite (Fig. 6b and Fig. 7b), subjected to the usual and channel-die (plain strain state) compression at room, elevated (435 K) and low (77 K) temperatures. Essential qualitative and quantitative differences in the behaviour of the rate of AE events for various kinds of materials as well as for their particular types have been observed. The obtained results for metals and composites are discussed particularly on the basis of the influence of lithium and ceramic fibers on the deformation mechanisms and on the processes of microcracking formation. The AE activity in ceramics is discussed in the context of the pseudoplasticity effect and its relation to the formation and development of micropores and microcracks. In both cases the microstructural investigations using optical microscopy (Fig. 2c, Fig. 3b, Fig. 6c and Fig. 6d) and in the case of composites also using the scanning electron microscopy (Fig. 4b) have been carried out.
