In search of cost effective fabrication techniques of metal matrix composites (MMCs) the concept of in situ precipitation of the reinforcement in the metal matrix was proposed and developed during the last decade. This paper reports the results of study on fabrication and characterization of novel, low-cost aluminum matrix composites by in situ precipitation of reinforcement (intermetallics), using liquid Al-Si alloys as well as the powders of Fe and Cu as precursor elements for intermetallics. Incorporation of 5 wt % Fe and 5 wt % Cu powders into the Al-Si alloys followed by stir casting and gravity casting lead to the formation of intermetallic phases Al4FeSi (V(f) = 15 ÷ 35%) of 250 ÷ 350 H(v) (0.02), constituting the effective reinforcement of Al alloy [1,4]. Ultrasonic vibrations applied during solidification of composites have been found to refine significantly the precipitates of the hypoeutectic Al-Si matrix composite (Fig. 4). The composites exhibited significantly improved wear resistance (Fig. 5), hardness (Fig. 6) and compression behaviour (Fig. 9, 10), when compared with matrix alloys. The mechanism of wear in dry sliding of in situ composite as well as pure matrix material has been analysed. The novel in situ composites are proposed as the cost effective candidate materials for industrial applications, provided that the porosity of composites is reduced.
W poszukiwaniu tanich kompozytów na bazie stopów Al powstała koncepcja otrzymywania kompozytów in situ o osnowie stopu Al-Si w reakcji ciekłego stopu Al-Si (Al-Si11, Al-Si25) z proszkiem Fe [1, 4].
