Decomposition of formic acid proceeds on metals, for example on silver, to generate H2 and CO2. Some 40 years ago this reaction was used in the research carried out to determine an influence of defects and surface structure of a catalyst on the reaction course. The rate-determining slow step was presumed to be the simultaneous abstraction of the two hydrogen atoms from physically adsorbed, or weakly chemisorbed, formic acid molecule, and the transition state. ... This work attempts to link the mechanism of formie acid decomposition with the NIRAM approach (Negative-Ion-Radical Action Mechanism), orientated towards interpretation of tribochemical reaction mechanisms. The NIRAM approach is based on the lowenergy electron emission process under friction conditions. Taking into account the above-mentioned mechanisms of formic acid decomposition and considering the most recent data concerning model calculations of the emission of thermal electrons.... As a preliminary confirmation of this mechanism we refer to the results of the research on two simple reactions: water synthesis from molecular hydrogen and molecular oxygen on a platinum catalyst initiated by heat and by friction and carbon dioxide synthesis reaction during rubbing of palladium against aluminum oxide. It is demonstrated that this mechanism also allows to account for results of work in which two types of active sites were suggested to be responsible for formie acid decomposition under scratching tests on steel. Proposed mechanism of formic acid decomposition requires experimental confirmation. Also a comparison needs to be madę between catalytic and tribocatalytic reactions on different catalysts. For that purpose a cooperation has been planned with Chiba Institute of Technology in Japan.
