Successive stages of the development of unalloyed and microalloyed structural steels, together with adequate metallurgical and hot working technologies are presented in the paper. A special attention is focused on the metallurgical finishing of microalloyed steels in ladle processes, the continuous casting of ingots and hot working in controlled conditions of temperature and strain rate. Knowledge of data concerning a precipitation kinetics ofMX-type phases and a course of the statical recrystallization of plastically deformed austenite as a function of temperature is indispensable at planning hot rolling of massive metallurgical products with high and stable practical properties in energy-saving integrated processes.
