The electroplating of Ni-W amorphous coatings from citrate aqueous solutions was studied with the aim of determination the optimal condition to obtain high tungsten content and good quality of the deposits. The influence of bath composition and the operating parameters on the tungsten content and the alloy properties were discussed. It was shown that the most important variable determining the alloy chemical composition and current efficiency is the concentration of tungstate ions in solution. As the WO4 2- concentration in the bath was increased, at a constant Ni(II) species content, the tungsten content in the alloy increased too, whereas the Faradaic efficiency decreased. No effect of mass transport limitation on Ni-W electrodeposition process was observed. The amorphous coatings are formed when the tungsten content is higher than about 40 wt. %. The obtained deposits containing considerable amount of tungsten (>60 wt. %) revealed a characteristic crack pattern, although they were well adherent to the steel substrate.
