Results of laboratory hot deformation tests and industrial hot rolling trials offerrite-pearlite steel products are presented. The causes of banded microstructure formation and methods for reducing of this type of microstructure inhomogeneity are determined. The correlation between solidification structure of continuously cast billets and the macrostructure of strand at intermediate stages during hot rolling and the microstructure of final products were analyzed. It was found that primary cause of microstructural banding is chemical heterogeneity arising from dendritic mechanism of steel solidification. The structure banding could be reduced when suitable parameters of hot rolling of continuously cast billets are applied but this method cannot eliminate original reason of banding. The banding might return as a result of following thermomechanical or heat treatment.
