Analytical pyrolysis is an adequate tool for the examination of aromatic brominated flame retardant in electronic scrap, because the macromolecular additives decompose thermally into recognisable volatile components, hence their identification and quantitation can be performed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Two typical components of electronic scrap of high bromine content (8- 10 mass. %) have been investigated. On-line GC-MS analysis of the thermal decomposition products revealed that the flame retardants applied were brominated epoxy resin, and brominated polystyrene. The effect of potential dehalogenating reagents proved to be measurable applying pyrolysis-GCIMS on waste samples pyrolysed together with the reagent.
