An attempt to model a distribution of internal stress in the surface layer of steel types HS 6-5-2, and 38CrMoV5-1, after their vacuum nitriding, is presented. The key point of the model is an assumption of macroscopic stress after nitriding process being a superposition of stresses originating from particular nitrides. For the discussed alloys, a data-base concerning stress fields surrounding each nitride, having different structure and size, has been constructed with the help of the ANSYS software. Calculations of internal stress have been carried out using a finite element approach after an introduction of a nitrogen concentration profile. The results obtained in this way have been verified experimentally, with the help of the Waismann-Philips method. Internal stress distribution characteristics obtained with the applied methods exhibit a substantial degree of correlation.
