It is a known fact that mining activity, specially opencast mining, is bound to damage land and land use of the concerned area in some way or other, which is a damage to ecosystem. Present paper is an attempt to assess this damage qualitatively and quantitatively. Samples have been collected from areas distributed over different parts of India covering a time span as long as could be madę possible (in somes cases up to 100 years) with a purpose of getting a reflection of indirect as well as intangible damages in addition to direct ones. The trend of change in amount of different land-use types caused by coal-mining in India has been presented.
