The paper presents nitrided layers on C10 steel and their corrosion properties. Nitrided layers with a surface layer of iron nitrides with the γ’ (Fe4N) structure were formed on unalloyed steel upon which their investigation was performed. The Surface layers of iron nitrides had a thickness of 3.0 to 11.0 μm. Such layers may constitute an alternative for the hitherto industrially manufactured, thick-surface layers of nitrides exceeding 20 μm, subsequently oxidised and impregnated. The so-produced layers were subject to basic metallographic, X-ray crystallography and corrosion resistance testing carried out using electrochemical methods and in a neutral salt spray chamber. It was found that the layers consisting exclusively of γ’ phase had a good corrosion resistance. A complete tightness and thickness of the layers not lower than 9.0 μm is a prerequisite for achieving an enhanced resistance. Thinner layers demonstrated good electrochemical properties however they did not exhibit corrosion resistance in the salt spray chamber.
