Najwyższy wkład do całkowitego śladu wodnego konsumenta miało spożycie produktów pochodzenia zwierzęcego (724,4 m3/os./rok), a następnie zbóż (266,9 m3/os./rok) oraz kawy, herbaty i kakao (82,1 m3/os./rok).
Traditional national household water consumption calculations are limited to direct consumption expressed in water intake volumes. However, water intake indices do not provide any information on real water needs of the inhabitants as related to their consumption. The research included also indirect consumption - volumes of water used for production of foods consumed by the population of Poland (virtual water). The total water footprint related to foods consumption in Poland in the years 2009-2010 amounted to 48,988 million m3/year. The average consumer in Poland had a water footprint of ca. 1271.4 m3/year. The highest contribution to the total consumer water footprint was that of animal products (724.4 m3/person/year), followed by cereals (266.9 m3/person/year), coffee, tea and cocoa (82.1 m3/person/year). The water footprint assessments provide a possibility to widen the scope of analyses in the water management through incorporation of the consumer's perspective and demonstration of how the lifestyle and consumer choices affect the water environment.
